Trinity Cathedral Celebrates Sewanee Connections with Visit from Organist Robert Delcamp
On Saturday morning, January 23, Trinity Cathedral’s curate, the Reverend Sarah Miller, will be ordained to the priesthood. At the console, Dr. Robert Delcamp, Professor of Music and University Organist and Choirmaster from The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee will serve as a guest organist.
There is a unique connection between the ordinand and the esteemed professor. “Singing in the University Choir as a Sewanee undergraduate was one of the greatest joys of my time there,” shared Miller, “and I attribute much of that to Dr. Delcamp’s leadership. His commitment to bringing out the best in choir members, his choice of music that is both a challenge and delight to sing, and his dedication to producing excellent music in the Anglican tradition make being a part of his choir a uniquely formative and enriching experience.”
A common link between the two is the cathedral’s Canon Precentor, Dr. Marty Wheeler Burnett. Prior to moving to Omaha, Burnett taught at Sewanee and returned to complete a Doctor of Ministry degree. During those years, she and Delcamp developed a close friendship and collaborated on several performances.
“We had been discussing dates for an organ recital at Trinity Cathedral, and Sarah’s ordination presented the perfect opportunity for a return visit to Omaha,” explained Burnett. Delcamp performed at the cathedral several years ago, prior to the restoration of the pipe organ in 2011. “I wanted to offer him the opportunity to play our beautifully restored instrument with its new console.”
As part of the celebratory week, Delcamp will present an organ recital on Thursday evening, January 21 at 7:30. A specialist in nineteenth and twentieth century organ repertoire, Delcamp will present works by Alexandre Guilmant, César Franck, and several modern composers. The program features a variety of pieces designed to showcase the cathedral’s historic pipe organ. The restored instrument contains pipes from the original 1890 and 1932 organs, as well as additions made in the 1960s, 1980s, and 2011.
As a concert artist, Delcamp has toured extensively throughout the United States, performing for numerous chapters of the American Guild of Organists and presenting workshops on organ technique, hymn playing, and organ repertoire, as well as concerts and workshops devoted to the organ music of Marcel Dupré. His highly regarded recordings for Naxos include three volumes in the Organ Encyclopedia series of the complete works of Dupré and CDs of organ music by Camille Saint-Saëns, Alexandre Guilmant, and Charles-Marie Widor.
This week, Delcamp’s considerable talents will grace Nebraska’s cathedral, celebrating friendships and ministries old and new, brought together through the gift of music.
